The Oprah Winfrey Show is the driving force behind getting thousands of Americans to pick up a book that is recommended by Oprah. It is through her talk show that she promotes her Book Club choices and discusses them live on television. Throughout her discussions on the "power of reading, Winfrey embeds countless practices" (Lofton 56). Not only does she want her audience to read her Book Club choices, but to make reading a daily activity. Oprah wants her followers to read daily, whether it is a Book Club book or something they picked up on their own. Reading everyday should be a ritual, one that will improve our mind and soul. I discuss this issue throughout my paper because my entire argument is about how Oprah has influenced education in America through her Book Club and through reading in general. It is important because today we live in a society where teenagers mock those were carrying books around with them in school. As adults, it isn't uncommon to hear someone being called a "nerd" or a "dork" because they read during their breaks in between classes or while on the airplane. When Americans begin to learn how powerful reading is within our society, it won't be unusual to find kids who are as anxious to go to a bookstore as they would be to go to Disneyland. My classmates need to care about my research because whether they become parents, aunts or uncles, they need to be able to show and teach children the benefits of reading. Reading makes them intellectually stronger and more competent for secondary and post secondary education. A lot of jobs require their employees to read manuals, instructions, documents, proposals, etc. and we all need to practice now. The Oprah Winfrey Show is the band wagon and has a domino affect. Her primary audience are women who eventually share their new favorite book with their parents, spouses, children, students, co-workers, etc. As a new group of readers see how captivating and enlightening reading books are, they will hopefully continue to keep reading. This affects us today and in the future. Imagine a world where the majority of Americans become illiterate and can't comprehend and analyze what they are trying to read. Comprehension is a "use-it-or-lose it" sort of skill and to be a competent and competitive member of society, we should all listen to Oprah's advice and read, read, READ!
